1. Firstly you need to figure out how much money you are willing to spend on the project so that you can guesstimate the size of the finished railroad layout. To save money you can always custom build your own trains, buildings, trees and so on.

2. Now you will need to choose a suitable place for your layout. Ideally this would be in a garden or a garage. The scale of the train models will determine how much stuff you can cram into one square meter.

3. Next the buying of the first batch of track, scenery and trains will be required which is not the easiest of task because of the choices that are available to you. 5. Now you can build the scenery around the tracks which can either be bought in themed packages or home made using your own crafting ability. The more resourceful you are the better the finished product will be as you have more to work with.

6. Make sure that the power supply setup that you have is sufficient enough to run the model train layout for hours without any problems.

7. Now just go back to the previous steps and focus on improving every aspect of your design, layout and project.
